He messed up his speech because he was so nervous. muddle: to confuse; bring into disorder: They muddled me with their various accounts of the event. overwhelm: to defeat completely, with much larger or stronger forces; have such a strong effect on sb. that he feels completely helpless: We suffered an overwhelming defeat.
